What is bad breath?

(Halitosis)

Bad breath or Breath malodour indicates an unpleasant smell of the expired air, and it can have several origins.

Halitosis is the technical term for bad breath and originates from Latin “halitus” meaning breath and the Greek “osis” meaning “diseased”. It has long been a matter of concern and there are references to it in the Bible and Koran.

What are the causes and reasons for bad breath?

(Etiopathogenesis)

Everybody can have bad breath and the level of bad breath usually can differ on the base of dental health or disease (especially gum disease), production of saliva, age and general health.

It has been reported that 10% of subjects under 20 years and 25% of subjects older than 60% are affected by bad breath.

Bad breath can be a health, social and cosmetic problem that affects your life and social relationships and may affect the quality of life of your family and friends.

Dental reasons for bad breath

(Intra-oral halitosis)

  • Periodontitis (Tooth, Gum and Bone Disease)

  • Tongue coating (Tongue covered with excessive layers of bugs/bacteria)

  • Xerostomia (Reduced salivary production)

General health reasons for bad breath

(Extra-oral halitosis)

Approximately 10% of bad breath can be caused by extra-oral halitosis and bad breath can be the sign of a concern for your general health. Common causes of extra-oral bad breath are:

  • Medications, Dietary and lifestyle Habits (including tobacco smoking, alcohol)

  • Diabetes

  • Hepatic (Liver) Insufficiency

  • Renal (Kidney) Insufficiency

  • Ear-Nose-Throat Disease (such as Purulent Sinusitis; Postnasal drip)

  • Regurgitation oesophagitis (such as pharyngitis with Gastric Reflux)

  • Stress

  • Pulmonary (Lung) disease

  • Gastric (Gut) disease

  • Physiological aging

  • Halitophobia (Imaginary Bad Breath)

  • Other general health disorders

 Diagnosis of bad breath

In most of the cases, the identification of the reasons for bad breath is easily done trough a specialist dental consultation with our Periodontists, who are specialist in gum diseases and cosmetic gum surgery.

Where there is a suspect of non dental reasons, our specialists can organise multi-disciplinary medical visits for you and refer you directly to other medical specialists if needed.
